Director General, ONS
Welcome to the website of the Civil Service Commissioners.
On 1 April 2009 the Commissioners’ new Recruitment Principles came into effect. The Recruitment Principles reflect the continuing evolution of the Commissioners’ role as guardians of the principle of recruitment on merit on the basis of fair and open competition. The Recruitment Principles are designed to be high level, focussed and accessible. The Civil Service Order in Council has been amended to bring this change into effect.
There are 16 Civil Service Commissioners, we are drawn from a wide variety of backgrounds, and between us have extensive experience of management and leadership in the private, public and voluntary sectors. We are appointed by the Crown and independent of Government.
Here you will find out more about who we are and what we do. We have a short video which introduces us and our role. It is about three minutes long and we hope that you will find it an interesting introduction to our work.
Our Annual Report for 2007/08 covers our activities during the year in upholding the fundamental principle that selection for appointment to the Civil Service must be on merit on the basis of fair and open competition. We also report on our work in promoting the core values of the Civil Service, as set out in the Civil Service Code.
We would be very pleased to hear any comments you have about our work or this website.
