About us

We are appointed directly by the Crown under Royal Prerogative. We are not civil servants,are independent of Ministers, and we report annually on our work to The Queen – which we publish on this website.

We are recruited on merit following public advertisement and a fair and open selection process. From our different careers and interests, we bring experience of the public, private and voluntary sectors. This can help to give us insights into how the Civil Service can best serve the public and earn their confidence.

Our Code of Practice sets out the standards of conduct we will observe.  We record private interests which might influence our judgement, or which could be perceived to do so, in a Register of Interests.
