The promotion of the Code

The Commissioners work with departments to help them promote the core values of the Civil Service as outlined in the Civil Service Code.

The Commissioners took on this role in 2003 at the suggestion of the Committee on Standards in Public Life, and with the support of the Cabinet Secretary.

In 2007, the Commissioners, working in conjunction with the Cabinet Office and a group of permanent secretaries produced a best practice checklist of actions for departments to uphold and promote the Code.

The Commissioners seek to find other engaging and effective ways to help departments to promote the values in the Code.  For the past few years the Commissioners have been pleased to sponsor the Cabinet Secretary's Award at the Civil Service Awards.  The award goes to a team or individual that has communicated or displayed the values in their work.  We have also run Question Time sessions on the Civil Service values at Civil Service Live events in London, Gateshead and Manchester.

In 2009 the Commissioners ran their first full audit of the actions of departments to uphold and promote the Code.  The results are reported in our Annual Report 2008-09.
